Southern Sky Talk podcast

Update: episode #10

(August 14 - August 21)

Full Moon rising

Full Moon was on August 9, and Oleg Toumilovitch of Foton Optoelectronics caught it rising, as shown in his pic on the left, at 18:14, barely four degrees above the horizon. No filters were used to get the dramatic colour; as Oleg writes, the Moon was "filtered only by thick Johannesburg air".

New SV Indii photometry

Bruce Dickson has been carrying out photometry of the southern variable star SV Indii; his most recent observations are collected in the light curve shown here, which is a composite of 3,646 V-band observations made over a period of 15 days. The star, a W Uma type variable, is around 13th magnitude and lies near alpha Pavonis. "Note the ripple present on the top of the curve," he writes. Christopher Middleton has observed something similar in another W Uma star, ST Indii. Because he and Middleton use different equipment and procedures, Dickson suspects the ripples are not artifacts, but reflect some genuine behaviour of the star. He speculates that the stars may exhibit high frequency (approximately 20 minute) oscillations.

More details on the SV Indii page.
