SAASTA October Astronomy Month (2008)
Each October for the past five years, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) have hosted National Astronomy Month. I took part in the 2004 Astronomy Month, and it was a great opportunity to introduce astronomy to people who hadn't yet looked through a telescope at the Moon and planets.
This year, along with colleagues Edward Foster and Carol Botha, we're putting on a "road show" and will be visiting smaller towns in the West Coast, Breede River Valley and Klein Karoo.
There have been some hiccups with the administration and funding of these events, so our first official visit will be to Piketberg on October 10. We will be in Moorreesburg on the 11th, Robertson on the 17th, Ashton on the 18th, Montagu on the 31st, and Barrydale on November 01. Our first two proposed visits, to Velddrif and Green Village/West Coast Fossil Park, had to be cancelled because of delays, but we will reschedule and visit them in November or December.
nothing more to see. please move along.
