So yeah, it's true! Honda have apparently been developing air bags for bikes since 1990, and they're now ready to use them on production vehicles. I would never have thunk it.

My first touring bike, a Suzuki GS 550e, with bikini-fairing and saddlebags.

We made many sets of leather saddlebags; the left image was the first set I used, with an Orion-studded pattern. The right-hand image, taken at Stag's Head in Cape Town, is of the leather pool cue cases Peet and I made.

First camp site, at Saldanha, with the Suzuki. Johannie and I used the small pup tent as storage, while a canvas stretched between the bikes covered our sleeping quarters. Soon after, I had a massive water-proof canvas made, which completely covered both bikes, with room to sleep four people. This was a most admirable arrangement, which left us happy and dry even during heavy downpours on tour in the Knysna region.

Pride & joy – my Kawasaki LTD 550. New, larger saddlebags, small side bags, and a toolkit under the main light (all self-made) completed the kit.

Camping with Ivor at the top of Franschoek Pass.

2006 December: The LTD on the way to hospital, Cillie in the background doing CPR.
