Southern Milky Way

The spectacular stretch of Milky Way around the Eta Carinae nebula (centre) contains a wealth of deepsky objects, many visible to the naked eye, beautifully captured in George's image.

"Eta Carina is one of my favourite nebulae," writes George, who took the image on 2007 March 17 from his backyard in Rustenburg. He used a Canon 350D (piggybacked on his Meade and guided) with a Sigma 70-300mm lens set at f/4 and 70mm, stacking 12 five-minute exposures. "The star colours show up nicely," George added.

George previously took a close-up shot of the Eta Carinae nebula, and also imaged the Milky Way in Scorpius and Sagittarius.
