NGC 5236, better known as Messier 83, is a member of a group of nearby galaxies seen in the direction of Centaurus. It is a splendid object for small telescopes; the curved arms are apparent in even a 6-inch telescope.
George imaged the galaxy from a dark site (about 50km outside Rustenburg), taking 12 images of 10 minutes each (at ISO 800) and combining them to produce this beautiful view.
For a comparison of dark vs. light-polluted skies, see George's other image of NGC 5236.
