Ferdi took this image of the southern Milky Way from the Piekenierskloof Pass near Citrusdal. The 90-second exposure was made with a Pentax ME Super camera (28mm lens opened to f/3.5) and Fuji 200 ISO print film. The faintest stars are about magnitude 7.5.
Tracking was accomplished with a barn-door tracker. In 1998, Derck Smits (now Prof Derck, at UNISA's Astronomy Dept.) published an analysis of barn-door drives in MNASSA. You can download his paper from the archive on the ASSA website.
I've used his image to make a slide show, below. By clicking on the various links you can see his original image, one with constellations identified, and one highlighting naked-eye deepsky objects. These objects are part of the Top 100 Deepsky Objects list.
