Posted 2007 May 15 @ 00:15 - filed under Astronomy
Constant Volschenk submitted two observations and sketches he made on a recent trip to Ezemvelo Nature Reserve. His first subject was the globular cluster NGC 2808, and the second the open cluster IC 2391.
Observing report: Richard Ford (2007 April 14/15)

Richard Ford (ASSA Cape Town Centre) reports on his deepsky observing session on 2007 April 14/15 at Fairview Dairy Farm (Conterman's Kloof, Cape Town). Richard used an 8-inch f/7 Dobsonian telescope and recorded eight objects. These are:
NGC 5139 (omega Centauri), NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), NGC 3918 (Blue Planetary), NGC 4755 (Jewel Box), NGC 3242 (Ghost of Jupiter), NGC 4594 (Sombrero Galaxy, Messier 104), NGC 3623 (Messier 65) and NGC 3627 (Messier 66).

Observing report: Carol Botha (2007 March)
Posted 2007 April 18 @ 21:18 - filed under Astronomy
Carol Botha (Cape Town) has submitted the first set of 20 observations of objects on the Top-100 Objects for consideration for a merit award.
I am still processing her sketches, but for now, do take a look at
NGC 5139 (omega Centauri), NGC 4755 (Jewel Box), and NGC 5128 (Centaurus A).

Database progress

Woops. The database is still being web-ified.
In the meanwhile, other DOC resources that may interest you are the comprehensive tutorial, the observing checklist, and even the Southern Sky Talk podcast
The database is based on historical and observing records by Auke Slotegraaf, with a major addition from the work of Magda Streicher. A scattering of observations from other ASSA observers will also be included.
Auke Slotegraaf's database lists 11 670 objects, of which 8 781 have NGC designations and 858 are in the IC. Beyond the NGC/IC, 2 031 entries are listed. This latter group refers to unique catalogue designations and not necessarily unique objects, as there is some overlap when an object receives cross-designations.
To date, Magda Streicher has contributed observations of 437 objects. This includes 92 asterisms (77 of which she discovered herself). The non-asterim observations describe 269 NGC objects, 19 IC objects, 55 Bennett objects, amongst others. Her invaluable collection of sketches will also be added to the database.
