815 million people! The IYA 2009 Final Report has been released, and is available as a PDF from the IAU.

Also out, Postcards from the Edge of the Universe, a compilation from the popular "Cosmic Diary" IYA project, featuring "articles from astronomers around the world about the hottest astronomical topics of the moment". The PDF is also available from the IAU website.

SALT sees straight

From the SALT Blog: "But the highlight of the night (28 August), & indeed the culmination of the enormous Image Quality effort, was obtaining this magnificent image (with a freshly stacked primary mirror & great seeing) - stars with full width half maxima of 1.1 arcseconds over the entire field of view!!"

The image was taken with an Apogee 4Kx4K CCD Camera at the prime focus in a number of positions and merged.
