Evaluative DMing

My approach to character creation is rooted in my approach to DM'ing.

The player's task is to weave narrative, and the DM's is to evaluate, calculate the odds, and describe the outcome.

A character's actions (and in-actions) and the consequent outcomes define who they are and how, usually over a period of time, they change. It is these changes that are noticed and evaluated by the DM, operationalized along pertinent dimensions to reflect the growth (along existing lines, and of new facets) of the character and the character's influence on the "outside world". more

Fill in the Blank

Exercise: Find a word that will work when you put it in every blank in the paragraphs below:

_____ is something people do because it's fun. _____ is best with other people, preferably people you know, love, and trust. Because such powerful issues as identity, emotion, and self-worth are involved, _____ can be liberating, terrifying, abusive, and glorious, depending on how you do it. However, if _____ isn't fun, you're probably doing something wrong.

_____ is primarily a creative endeavour, but some people have been doing it the same exact way for their entire lives.

some people like to do _____ one way, while other people like to do it in other ways. Some sad people think that there is only one way to do _____ and that any other way is wrong. They will defend their version of _____ and attack others' versions for long periods of time.

Similarly, the things that one person likes about _____ may not be the same things that another person likes about _____. It's a good idea to talk about _____ before starting to do it with that person to prevent embarrassing and discouraging failures to enjoy yourselves.

Keeping these simple facts in mind will help you make _____ a powerful and worthwhile part of your life!

Climatology for World Building

Once you've got your world map drawn, with the geography – land masses, oceans, rivers, mountains – in place, the next step is to figure out the climate. I recommend the widely-used Köppen climatic system, which I describe and ever so slightly adapt for FRPG world-building. In addition to a thorough account of the various real-world climate types, I also explore the relationship between climate and "terrain types", and how climate determines man's subsistence activities. more

For world builders, I can heartily recommend Chad Ryan Thomas' CRT-Worldbuidling discussion list. High signal-to-noise ratio mailing list. Get it.

Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips Weekly e-zine is a wonderful compilation of posts and guest articles.

Markus was looking bad

From Book 22 of the Travels:

"In the next breath, as if a moment frozen and stretched out in time, we saw the very air above it, ice cold like a cave in the Nahylor Peaks, shimmer and then congeal into the shape of a being of indescribable evil." more
